President:

Prof. Gloria S. Karuri

Professor Gloria S. Karuri is from Bassa LGA of Plateau State. She holds Associate Degrees in Pharmacy Technology (Major) and Business Administration (Minor), a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) in Psychology, a Master of Science (M.Sc) in Clinical Psychology, and a Doctorate (Ph.D) in Clinical Psychology.

She served as Head of Department, Department of General and Applied Psychology, University of Jos from 2016 to 2021. She is the Chairperson of the Plateau State Chapter of the Nigerian Psychological Association (NPA), Financial Secretary of the Community Intervention Network on Drugs (CIND) in Nigeria since 2016, and a member of the Committee on Alcohol Policy in Nigeria (ISSUP). She also serves as a visiting lecturer at Baze University, Abuja, and is a member of the Governing Council of Plateau State University, Bokkos (PLASU).

Leadership in Substance Abuse Prevention

Prof. Karuri is the Executive Director of Isana Center for Information and Substance Abuse Treatment (ICISAT), a non-governmental organization established in 2005. ICISAT is devoted to the prevention, management, and treatment of substance use/abuse, substance-induced and related disorders, and mental illness. The NGO has been a certified trauma treatment center since 2014, with a mission to reverse substance use trends through public sensitization and intervention programs.

Professional Experience

With over four decades of public service and more than 25 years in psychology teaching, research, and community service, Prof. Karuri has made significant contributions to mental health and substance abuse management in Nigeria.

Vice President: Dr. Mkpang Ita

Mkpang Ita (PhD)

Mkpang Ita (PhD) has sixteen years of experience treating people with mental illnesses as the Assistant Director of Clinical Psychology at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital Aro in Abeokuta, Nigeria. His expertise in child and adolescent clinical psychology enables him to provide evidence-based therapies to children, adolescents, and families living with behavioural and emotional health challenges.

He obtained his PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Ibadan, where he developed a strong commitment to advancing professional psychological care. His work has contributed to establishing Neuropsychiatric Hospital Aro as a national centre of excellence in psychological treatment and mental health services.

Mkpang has earned recognition from the Nigerian Association of Clinical Psychologists, where he serves as the Assistant General Secretary, and from the Nigerian Correctional Service, where he is a member of the Ogun State Parole Board.

Beyond his clinical responsibilities, Mkpang finds joy in uplifting people. In his free time, he enjoys cooking and watching movies—activities that help him relax and stay inspired.
